I want to first start out by saying thank you! Thank you for trying to help make the world a better place for our animal friends. I truly believe that animals are not here to serve us, but to teach us. Love, compassion, responsibility are a few amongst the many ways animals help enrich our lives. When we see them suffering, and we are in a position to help I believe we should. Thank you for fostering.
ok, now that that’s out of the way here are some common mistakes new fosters make.
Using clay litter for very small kittens. Kittens should not use clay litter until they are a little bigger. Any kitten under 2 months should use pine or paper. They can ingest the litter and it can make them sick. Any kitten learning how to use a box for the first time should use shredded paper.
You MUST refrigerate KMR. Breeders Edge can stay out, but KMR must be refrigerated. Do not feed a neonate or a kitten cows milk. Goat’s milk can be mixed with powdered formula. Make sure to get the ratios correct.
Do not feed any neonate or small kitten any kitten milk. The name is very misleading. For example, Whiskers kitten milk is a treat for adult cats. It will kill a neonate and can make a kitten very sick.
4. When finding litter of kittens outside or at a rescue to foster DO NOT separate litters. Do not just take the cute ones. Do not leave the black ones or the sick ones behind. Take the entire litter and give them each the individualized care they need. Very important to not separate litters of young kittens . This is their family. Their social network. They need each other to thrive.
5. Trust your gut, and ask lots of questions. As we work closely with these animals I truly believe we develop an intuitive relationship with them. They can tell us what’s wrong and what they need with a simple stare. Do not go rogue but ask lots of questions, and if you feel uneasy about an answer or a medication do research. Visit different vet offices or at least make phone calls . It’s always hard losing a sick kitten. Be thorough in your care for them, and trust your gut when something feels wrong.
No one gets it right 100% of the time. We all make mistakes sometimes, and if someone tells you differently they are a liar!😂 We are a community and here to help one another. Do not be afraid to ask for help and reach out to Kitten Season TV if you have any questions.
